What has Mr. Marine been up to lately?
By: Mike Gardiner

Who can forget about Mr. Marine? The man, the teacher, the legend. He has left students here at St. Joe with fond memories, ranging from watching the Daily Show/ Colbert Report every class to keep up with our current political goings-on with comedic twists to learning about Ancient Greece with his epic chariot races. No doubt, Mr. Marine has greatly influenced our school.

As many of us may know, Mr. and Mrs. Marine left us at the end of last year to move to Vermont to teach there. Since his arrival there, Mr. Marine has created a number of fun and informative after-school programs at his new school in Bennington, Vermont. Back in early December, he taught about the period of the 1960’s using the “Beatles Rockband” video game. There he donned one of his signature costumes.

More recently, however, Mr. Marine has begun a “Magical Mystery Bus” tour of the local area in which he lives, and teaches his students the local history of their town by visiting museums, and art centers in his town of Bennington. Having grown up in the Philadelphia area, Mr. Marine was surrounded by museums dealing with famous events in our nation’s history. He said he never took advantage of his own local history and doesn’t want this to happen to his students now.

“When you live there you never go to see it,” said Mr. Marine to his local Bennington Banner newspaper.

But that is all for now from Mr. Marine. I hope to be back writing to the readers of The Voice about the new and exciting things Mr. Marine is doing.

Sony Reader vs. Kindle
 By: Alexa Gomez

In recent years, there has been a rapid rise in the popularity of e-book readers. These new devices are portable (smaller than the books, themselves) and can hold several gigabites of data, making reading easier, more enjoyable, and more efficient than before. There are many different e-book readers, but the two most popular are the Sony Reader and the Kindle.

The Sony Reader not only displays books (from the e-book store), but documents and MP3 files, making it a very versatile device. It is also very easy to use. There is no need for a computer because all of the books can be downloaded directly onto the device using AT&T. The Sony Reader has a touchscreen, can hold a charge for up to two weeks, and can be used in direct sunlight (because it has sixteen levels of grayscale). At $200, the Sony Reader is a practical device that will save money and resources in the long run.

The Kindle is another e-book reader that has been popular for two years. The Kindle can also hold books, documents, and MP3 files, but it does not require a wireless carrier, like AT&T. Instead, it connects directly to the internet for the purchase of books from the e-book store. Like the Sony Reader, the Kindle is a touchscreen, can hold a charge for up to two weeks (less, if it is connected to the internet), and has sixteen levels of grayscale that allow reading indoors and outdoors. The main difference between the two devices is display size and price. While the Sony Reader has a seven inch display, the Kindle has a nine inch display. The newest version of the Kindle is much more expensive than the newest version of the Sony Reader, costing approximately $300.

Both e-book readers offer their benefits and drawbacks, but e-book readers in general will have a tremendous impact on the way that we consume resources and spend money.

Art Department Update
By: Alexandra Nowak

I recently contacted our new art teacher, Ms. Hickerson to see what her students in the art department have been working on. It seems as though she has many things planned for our school and the students in the Art Department.

In Art I, the students are creating their own "Custom Kicks" by refurbishing old shoes or buying new ones and designing them in great detail. This project will bring their ideas to life and placed onto unique fashion that they can wear. There will also be a gallery exhibit for this art project in the Media Center. There will be voting and judging for these "Custom Kicks" to declare the winners of Best Class and Best in Show.

In Art II, the students were assigned to create a portrait using different materials to reflect their personal individuality and view on the world. Also, the Massai Tribe will be visiting SJHS on April 19th, the students are thinking of ideas for custom made jewelry to present to the Massai Tribe to demonstrate our appreciation and respect.

Lastly, in the Sculpture classes they are working on abstract sculptures made from unusual materials such as panty hose or wire to bring their ideas to life. These students are also thinking of ideas for their edible candy sculptures that they will be creating. They were placed in 5 groups and each group will make a "Willy Wonka meets Candy Land" sculpture project which will be produced from various candies, chocolates, and other sweets.

I also asked Ms. Hickerson what she thought of her time at SJHS and her students so far. She replied, "I love being a part of SJHS. The faculty members are awesome and have been gracious and kind towards me.  My students are wonderful and I look forward to teaching new, fun, and eventful projects for years to come."
